Conservative billionaires Liz and Dick Uihlein, founders of Uline, have committed to financially supporting Donald Trump’s campaign as he aims to bridge the fundraising gap with President Joe Biden, according to the Financial Times.
The Uihleins, who established Uline in 1980, had previously donated to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s Republican primary campaign.
However, following Trump’s successes in the Super Tuesday primaries and the withdrawal of his Republican rival, Nikki Haley, the couple redirected their support to Trump’s campaign.
Campaign Funding Discrepancy Between Trump and Biden:
Trump has trailed Biden in fundraising efforts for the November 5 general election. His campaign reported over $30 million in cash holdings at the end of January, compared to Biden’s approximately $56 million. The Uihleins’ pledge to support Trump’s campaign aims to bolster his financial resources.
Each Uihlein had previously donated $1.5 million to DeSantis’ campaign and expressed intentions to contribute a similar amount to Trump’s campaign.
Their cumulative political contributions since the 2016 election cycle exceed $250 million, with a focus on conservative candidates and causes.
Views on Campaign Funding and Candidate Recognition:
In an interview with the Financial Times, Liz Uihlein questioned the efficacy of extensive campaign donations at this stage, noting that Trump and Biden are already well-known to voters.
Despite this skepticism, the Uihleins remain committed to supporting Trump’s candidacy.
